Course content

Primary Healthcare (PHC/ Puskesmas) is the backbone of basic services for the Indonesian population. They are located in every sub-district in Indonesia. Each puskesmas has a network of auxiliary puskesmas, village health posts, and village midwives. In addition to their pivotal role in primary care, puskesmas have other roles related to public health and community development. Puskesmas are the place to implement programs created by the ministry of health and international programs. Learning about PHC management is one of the important strategies in understanding how the health system in Indonesia works, how PHCs are managed and how effective their programs are for the surrounding population.

 

Learning objectives

After completing the course the student should be able to:

  1. Determine program focus according to interest
  2. Determine one of the three major functions of Puskesmas: primary care, primary health care, or public health essentials
  3. Analyze the field situation and look for best practices in the field
  4. Create sensitivity to the field situation and develop solutions to problems found

  2. Potential and barriers to managing PHC programmes in urban and rural areas
  3. PHC as the basis of medical services (individual service efforts)
  4. Managing community empowerment efforts based on health centre personnel
  5. Managing outreach services and home-based care
  6. Managing Basic Emergency Obstetric Neonatal Care at the health centre
  7. Challenges in Puskesmas-based nutrition programmes
  8. How to overcome the problems caused by health centre staff who are also in private practice
  9. Puskesmas in remote areas: staffing and performance issues
  10. Health department strategies for monitoring maternal and child health
  11. The health department’s strategy to get health centre staff to develop the public health role of the health centre
  12. Monitoring and controlling in the context of good governance at the health centre level
  13. Financing management of individual and community health efforts and financial management
  14. Competence and training for health centre doctors

The teaching is delivered through a combination of 100% in-person classes.
