The DISCERN-DSS project aims to enhance the adoption of digital health in Indonesia and the broader Asian region by strengthening digital soft skills training in Indonesian health higher education through co-creative methods and Digital Scenario Based Learning (D-SBL). D-SBL employs interactive digital scenarios, such as virtual patients and serious games, to facilitate active, problem-based learning. This initiative addresses the regional priority of digital transformation in Asia by building digital soft skills capacity through the digitalization of problem-based teaching in Indonesian universities (PCUs).

The project will modernize the digital health curricula at PCUs by incorporating relevant digital soft skills (SO1), provide training for medical educators, technologists, and content experts on co-creative development of educational resources and D-SBL teaching methods (SO2), and enhance existing digital health courses by integrating virtual patient resources into new or current curriculum modules focused on digital soft skills (SO3). Additionally, it will upgrade PCUs’ administrative infrastructure by establishing roles and offices responsible for overseeing and updating digital soft skills training (SO4), and expand collaboration through a national coordinating body (SO5).

Targeting medical educators, technologists, and students, the project will conduct 2 international and 6 local train-the-trainer workshops on D-SBL. It will co-develop 15 D-SBL virtual patients across two modules (telemedicine and digital medicine), which will be used to train over 350 learners in digital soft skills. The project will also establish 3 Active Digital Literacy offices—one at each partner university—to support digital soft skills education, and create the National Excellence Hub for Transformative Digital Soft Skills. Finally, a set of localized recommendations for D-SBL teaching will foster collaboration among higher education institutions, businesses, and healthcare organizations, aligning with international and EU initiatives.
